Rorschach’s Journal,
The Shadow Hero is a really cool comic. It wasn’t something I was expecting but it was good. One thing I noticed was tradition in a family. How the mother was forced to marry a man she didn’t like and how she was forced to have a boy. Obviously, tradition plays a huge role in Chinese culture. But I found it ironic that the mother picked her son’s future just like they had picked hers.
There are a lot of references to DC superheroes in this comic. First of all, with the Anchor of Justice which is suppose to represent superman and not because of his flying powers but because of heat laser eyes and powerful breath. There’s also a nod to what appears to be Batman or even Nite Owl. When Mother is doing her research, he overhears a conversation about a man who doesn’t even have powers but trained really, really hard.
The comic is very well thought out. Giving the villain a backstory. One thing that I noticed was usually in superheroes, they fight crime whenever there’s a death in the family. In the Shadow Hero, here’s already a hero somewhat but the death of his father just gave him that push.
The Shadow Hero is fun and silly. I have never read a superhero comic where the hero becomes a superhero because their mom made do it. In a way, this comic reminds of Joss Whedon’s dialogue in the Avengers. It’s whacky, funny and it keeps the audience wanting more of it. When the Green Turtle was fighting in the ceremony and his mother just bursts in, that was funny. She is one of those characters that we discussed with Ms. Marvel. The ones who have no powers but yet contribute to the superheroes’ actions as much as they do.
