Rorschach’s Journal,
After reading Considering Watchmen, my look on Watchmen will never be the same. It crazy to think that so many themes and concepts go behind this elaborate story. Some were obvious while others were hidden and the reader had to look for them.
It’s clear that politics played a powerful role in the comics but it was interested that it was mostly influenced by Moore’s time in England during Thatcher’s rule. Being a screenwriter and artists, I guess you can say, I feel what Moore felt. Obviously an artist is going to express his or her oppression and ideals through their work. It’s the best way to get your voice out there. It makes sense that Moore would gather inspiration from his time in England because in a way, as the book pointed out, Nixon was the counterpart to her.
It was interesting that some of the questions I had in my head when I finished reading Watchmen came up in Hoberek’s book. One of them was “what if he never read Rorschach’s journal and instead picked up another story from the crank file?’. The was the question that I always wondered about and it was cool that they touched upon it because what if he never read it or if he did then what if he decided to keep it or even sell it? As Hoberek, said Rorschach wasn’t really a reliable source especially since he is a convict criminal. This was even mentioned later in the book by pointed out that Veidt did nothing when Rorschach left knowing that he was going to expose him. This made me think because maybe it’s true. What if nobody believed the story simply because of the author?
Knowing that Nite Owl and Silk Spectre could easily blow Veidt’s cover and letting them go was a great sign of power or maybe a sign of reputation. After all, Nite Owl and Silk Spectre have been banned from using their masks so who’s to say that anyone would believe them if they came forward.
I know that most people don’t like open-ended endings because they want a complete story but I felt that Watchmen ended perfectly with the line “I’ll leave it entirely in your hands”. As they said in the book, it’s up to us as a society to determine what happens next. Do we cause war or wage war against poverty?
