Located in Burbank, the House of Secrets is a small but friendly comic book shop with various and countless comics from the early ages to modern times. With very well organized shelves that makes finding any comic easy to various comic book toys around the store to add to any collector’s edition.
From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere of the store feels very welcoming especially since the staff takes the time to greet you. If they are not busy, which is a busy store, then they’ll come and talk to you and help you out. As you look around the store, it’s obvious that superheroes make up the majority of the books. On one side of the shelve are DC comics. All are modern day comics and on the other side are Marvel’s comics. Against the wall is where you’ll find the comics from the early days. Issues of the Amazing Spider-man to Captain America to Wonder Women.
It’s very obvious that the shop takes care of their comics and the meaning of them. The staff’s personality is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Any questions about any comic or character, the staff would know very well. Their character also appeals to the comic book characters. As some comic characters are goofy like Spider-Man, they are too. They keep up with all modern day comics and the storylines as well with any major movements the companies are doing.
Although there are numerous comic books, there is other merchandise available. There are various toys from comic book characters and t.v. shows. From a Judge Dredd toy figuring to Star Wars Stormtroopers. There is also a shelve dedicated to the art of comic book artists. There are books with concept art, books on drawing, books with just cover art and even scholarly books. There are books dedicated to just the origins of certain superheroes such as Batman. There is also manga on shelves.
Aside from Marvel and DC comics, there are also comics from Vertigo, Dark Horse and Rebellion Developments along with others. It’s a shop that truly embraces comics without being strict of which companies they want to display. The one on going comic series that really stands out besides the Marvel and DC comics are the newly Star Wars comics. They are on display so that the costumer can see them as soon as they walk in. The store even has a couch where costumers can sit and read their comics without feeling guilty of not buying anything. At first I was a little hesitant to sit and read but when I did, the staff said nothing but smiled instead.
The parking is street parking but it’s not bad at all. The shop shares its territory with a nice neighborhood so you don’t have to worry about getting your car broken into or stolen. Every time I go, I’m only a house away from the shop so there’s no problem with traffic. The shop may not look appealing from the outside because it doesn’t have any fancy letters or cool designs on the wall but it makes up for it inside.
Even though the shop is very small, it still plays a major role in comics just like the superheroes play a major role in the shop. Superheroes are what get people to walk into that store. Every time I was there, costumers would ask for the latest Winter Soldier or Justice League comic. Superheroes draw costumers into the door especially with t.v. shows and movies based on them. People flock to the shop to read on the latest issues or to at least gain knowledge of the superhero before they watch them on the big screen.
In a way, a comic book shop serves as a Batcave to costumers. Most people feel ashamed when they read a comic book and don’t want to be made fun of for being a “nerd”. So by going to a comic book shop, they feel comfortable by being around fellow people who enjoy the same items as they do. A comic book shop in a way is a portal to escape reality. When I walked in the store, I was entranced by all the comics and the possibilities of reading all of them. Before I knew it, time had flown by and I had to get going but that’s why comic book shops exist. They serve to get people into a world filled with creativity and imagination.
In a world where superheroes fill the small and big screen, comic book shops are the place to connect you into that atmosphere. Without superheroes, comic shops wouldn’t be obsolete but rather get no attention. As mentioned above, comic shops is a modern day Batcave where people can go and expose their alter ego and be around others like them.
