Rorschach’s Journal,
Wonder Woman had a lot going on for her on the page and off the page. I found it very interesting to read about Marston’s past and how he came up with Wonder Woman. Like all great superheroes, they all have an origin story.
So here’s a guy who’s obviously smart but I felt he sometimes got the short end of the stick. From being a professor to being reduced to a professor’s assistant and having his creation, Wonder Woman, be a secretary for the Justice Society. Come on. It was cool that he wanted to have a positive female hero out there since it seemed that no one was doing it but at the same time why would men write for a women character?
This subject actually reminds me of what occurred two weeks ago. Shortly after the Oscars, Michelle Rodriguez publicly stated that why aren’t there any Latino superheroes? And why aren’t there any Latino writers writing these superheroes? Why can’t we make our own? Easier said than done. The reason it reminded me of it was because even though it may seem that there are no Latino superheroes out there, the truth is that there are plenty of them. We just don’t see them just like we don’t see women superheroes but that’s all going to change within the next two years!
Because Marston wrote Wonder Woman, it does question his credibility. When Rob Schneider came out with his show “Rob”, it was a show about Rob being married or engaged to a Latina and him meeting her parents, well for being so Latino populated, it only had two Latino staff writers. That’s how I feel about Marston writing Wonder Woman. I understand woman couldn’t write back then and some even changed their names, but he could’ve helped out. I’m not trying to diss him but he should’ve of let females write some stories here and there.
I do want to end this on a good note instead of a sour one. I do admire the guy for creating such powerful figure even though some people tarnished her looks with sex symbols but knowing that there’s going to be a movie about her, he would’ve been proud. I also wanted to mention him living with two other women in the same house with kids. This guy! I am curious though what Byrne Marston will think when she sees Wonder Woman on the big screen standing next to two of the biggest superheroes in history! One can only wonder! Get it? Ha!
