Rorschach’s Journal:
The Dark Knight is one of my favorite movies. I remember going to the midnight premiere with my older brother and his friends. After the movie, I came out of the theater with a huge surprise on my face. To me everything about that movie was perfect especially the Joker. Even though it was menacing and extremely dark, I loved every aspect of it. I guess you can say I got a small glimpse of how people felt when they first read The Dark Knight Returns.
Yes the movie is dark but hey, it worked. I was disappointed it didn’t get nominated for an Oscar but oh well. Now that I read the Frank Miller’s comic and watched Christopher Nolan’s Batman, I can see so many similarities in it.
Both in the comic and film, Batman is still a criminal hunted down by the police and Commissioner Gordon is still the one man who has complete trust. I can also see why Christopher Nolan used Two-Face as another villain. We saw Bruce Wayne deal with his split personality in the film especially when the Joker threatened to kill people if he didn’t reveal himself. Just like in Frank Miller’s comic, we didn’t see a lot of Bruce Wayne in the film. It was as if Bruce couldn’t keep away from the Batsuit. There’s a scene when Bruce is talking to Alfred in the new batcave about Joker and how Bruce says “this is different” and Alfred tells him “some men just want to watch the world burn”, Bruce walks over and pulls up his suit, not to put it on but simply just stare at it and admire it. That told me that the Batman personality has completely taken over Bruce Wayne.
Another homage I saw to Frank Miller was at the beginning of the film when the copycat Batmen were fighting Scarecrow and the Russian mobsters. Like in the comic, Batman disapproved of their methods but instead of taking them under his wing, he quickly disarmed them and handled his business. Once again, this told me that he’s doing it for himself. He feels that no one can ever be him or no one can stop him that is until the Joker showed up.
The only thing that surprises me about this whole situation is that Frank Miller didn’t like the Batman movies. I guess according to him, they weren’t the Batman that he came to write. I liked both Batmen from the comics and film. I feel that they should have their own style since they’re both art.
