Rorschach’s Journal:
The Avengers! I can see why Hatfield said there were going to be some similarities between the comic and the film. I am glad though that Hulk in the movie never performed in the circus. The introduction of the team was pretty cool. Although I’m not a fan of Loki, I can see why they used him for the story.
The one thing that kept running to my head was the secret skins and how they were adapted into the film. Obviously Iron Man’s armor gets better throughout the comics but they kept it authentic in the film. Same with Thor except with his helmet and the Hulk, well the Hulk is just green. They gave Loki more of a royal costume which looked really cool but still kept the colors but they just darkened them.
I also got a glimpse of sexism in the Avengers #1. The only thing that Wasp kept on saying was things that “girls would say”. Ant-Man told her, he had no time to take her to action because he didn’t want to entertain himself with her powdering her nose. She also kept saying how cute and handsome Captain American was when they first met him. And after the battle with the Namor, she came into the panel saying “Oh I went to powder my nose”. Really Marvel?
The Tales of Suspense #39 was also a favorite of mine. Like the movie, Stark created a suit to escape but in the comics, it’s a little bit more racist. I understand why they did it during Vietnam since that’s what was going on during the time and same with the Iron Man movie by setting it in the Middle East. Maybe 20 years from now, people will think Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, was a bit racist to set it in the middle east. It did feel weird reading this comic because I’m so used to hearing how Iron Man sounds and they completely sound different. I guess this comic was suppose to boost up moral state wide by telling people to support the war. Since comics were huge and the Vietnam lacked support, they probably figured if they made a comic book hero fight the war then people would support it.
