Rorschach’s Journal:
Sorry for being late but I just wanted to focus on the prospectus paper more but here you go.
Well Ms. Marvel was definitely something else. The one thing I instantly notice was the references to white-privileged girls in today’s society and how some of them don’t take other’s culture into consideration. Zoe is the obvious one along with her jock boyfriend.
Although Spider-Man is a teenager, he has been around the block for years now. So has Ms. Marvel but the reason why I enjoyed this version was because how relatable it is to our time. I’m talking about her issues in high school and more specifically with her parents. Like Kamala, I too have seen my parents bring up our Mexican culture whenever they speak to us about this country. When Kamala’s father didn’t let her go out to the party simply because there would be boys and if she was a boy then he would let her go, it instantly reminded me of my sisters. I remember my dad doing the exact same thing to my sisters but not to my brother and me. This is a cause and effect because I have noticed that if parents contain or restrain their children then they’re growing to grow up rebellious. Later that night we see an example of it when Kamala sneaks out to the party.
The other thing that I felt that I could relate to this story was how Kamala mentioned she sometimes felt weird during school because she would take her traditional food or eat exotic meals that people in America would find weird. That was a similar case to me when I was younger. I always wondered why my mom would serve my brother and sisters beans and meat for breakfast instead of the traditional “white” breakfast with the waffles and bacon. Even going on field trips, I felt weird taking out tamales or enchiladas while my other classmates took out those portable Lunchables or sandwiches.
Overall, I really liked this Ms. Marvel for it’s unique approach for including a female character with a middle eastern background especially in a post-911 era. But I also enjoyed it because of the artists’ drawing. Very unique and eye catching.
