Before this class I had a good understanding of where all these famous superheroes came from but I never truly knew what inspired their creation. I love reading and watching an origin story. As a screenwriter and future film maker, one of my duties is to come up with a story and show it but every character needs a background and an origin story.
Characters like Popeye , Alley Oop and The Phantum really made me realize how much they influenced our modern day superheroes especially since some of them have similar character traits, powers and even costumes. I thought it was cool how the creator of Popeye did not taint, as they put it, his powers with realism but instead with good old fashion humor and imagination.
The one chapter that really good me excited to read and made me want more was The Great Comic Book Heroes. The way they described how the business used to be and all those longs hours for little pay and little sleep and food. It actually made me think of a couple of movies.
The read that chapters was narrated made me think of the movie Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall St. Again this is my film major coming out. The way I read this chapter was from a film makers perspective and all I could think of was maybe one day I could adapt this origin.
There were really good details in this chapter. It also made me think of the old days when screenwriters were seen as the bottom level of film making. The way the narrator described the process and all the pain and suffering they went through in order to make art, is an origin story itself.
One more interesting thing that came to my mind after reading this chapter was how it’s also similar to Mexican field/day laborers. I myself was never in that situation but my parents and family were and the way they described their working habits and conditions, immediately came into my mind when I read this chapter. They do would dream but their dreams were to live a better life not only for themselves but for us, their children.
